Rand Paul on Israeli groups: 'I visit with them daily'

Rand Paul Western Wall

Senator Rand Paul gave a speech on July 31st promoting his Amendment to eliminate aid to Egypt. (Amendment No. 1739 to S. 1243). The 4-page Amendment didn't mention Israel once, yet the transcript of Paul's speech mentioned Israel no less than 16 times.

There were a few revealing tidbits in Paul's speech, such as when Paul admits "There's probably 20 different groups in our country who support the nation of Israel and support them as our ally. I speak to them all the time. I visit with them daily and weekly in our office."

Paul also noted:
-"I've had both private and public discussions with the leaders of Israel"
-"It's about doing things that actually I think would be beneficial to Israel."
-"I'm precisely worried about them using them against Israel."
-"What happens when these weapons are used against Israel?"

Here are some more excerpts and a video of Paul's speech which he posted on his Senate website. Maybe Paul should visit with constitutents from Kentucky daily instead, and address their concerns instead of being constantly obsessed with Israel. Some additional Rand Paul archives are below.

Senate Votes on Paul Egypt Aid Amendment

I fear one day that someone may arise in Egypt who says let's attack Israel with these planes. Let's attack Israel with these tanks.

People say "well, if we don't give them planes, if we don't pay them to buy our planes, they will think we don't like them and they will go to war with Israel.

I'm precisely worried about them using them against Israel.

What happens when these weapons are used against Israel?

I have spoken to many people who love, respect and have a great deal of admiration for Israel. I admire our relationship and our alliance and am very proud of the fact that we stand together on so many issues.

So to bring it up and say "oh, the people who are against this don't care about Israel is just a canard." I think that this precisely continuing to arm an unstable government in Egypt could well be to Israel's harm, and that's precisely why I bring this amendment forward.

This is an important debate. It's not about doing things to harm Israel. It's about doing things that actually I think would be beneficial to Israel.

So buying arms, American tanks and American tear gas to be used for crowd control isn't exactly what the Egyptian people have in mind as far as engagement. With regard to Israel, there is no unified statement from the nation of Israel saying that they're for this. I've had both private and public discussions with the leaders of Israel, and to tell you the truth, without naming individuals, I can tell you they're not too excited about sending more arms to Egypt.

So for someone to come to the floor and say they speak for the nation of Israel, they speak for all people who love Israel in our country, it's just false. There's probably 20 different groups in our country who support the nation of Israel and support them as our ally. I speak to them all the time. I visit with them daily and weekly in our office.
